UVCE ‘special’ exam row refuses to die down

For Bangalore University (BU) vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev the controversy surrounding the conduct of ‘special’ exam for one set of students by University Visveshwarayya College of Engineering (UVCE) refuses to die.

A section of syndicate members now allege that the vice-chancellor has not “kept his word” of conducting an inquiry as assured during the 100th BU syndicate meeting held on September 5.

In a letter they have asked for an explanation as to “whether the students who undertook such an examination had completed the stipulated period of attendance in order to sit for the said ‘special’ examinations?” They also wondered as to “how were the results of both the examinations, conducted on two different days, were announced on the same day?”

The VC had claimed that the chairmen of the concerned departments had given permission for the examinations. The syndicate members allege that the VC favoured this group of students in “exchange for some benefit.”

“Such serious matters seem to have been taken very casually by the VC,” the letter stated.

The members have also raised the issue of inquiry into the matter of the OMR sheets, which was signed only by the examinations special officer, “Wherein he has given more marks to students who have failed and has solely appended his signature and seal to it.”

“As the reply given by the VC and the present Registrar Evaluation was not satisfactory, the syndicate members demanded that the matter be handed over to a Government agency such as CID/COD or such similar agency capable of inquiring and investigating the matter,” the letter said.

The members have demanded an explanation failing which, they have said that they will be “constrained to report this matter to the concerned Government investigating agency.”

It may be recalled that UVCE had twice conducted the final semester engineering examinations for electronics and communications, computer science and mechanical engineering branches. For eight students it was held on June 8, whereas for the rest it was held on July 4.
