Transferable Development Rights uproar in Bangalore

Thousands of residents across the city who are anxious about the future of their properties due to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP’s) road-widening plan, at last have some hope.

An uproar over the issue of road-widening and the controversial Transferable Development Rights (TDR) at BBMP’s monthly Council meeting on Tuesday led to mayor SK Nataraj deciding to call for a special meeting of Council members to discuss the issue threadbare, and only then decide on whether to go ahead with the road-widening project without causing inconvenience to the citizens.

“The meeting will also decide on the feasibility of the TDR model for acquiring land for the road-widening project,” Nataraj said.

Nataraj said the issue of road-widening was tricky, and the
residents were cursing the civic agencies as they did not want the roads to be widened at the cost of their properties. “We need to a have a detailed debate on the issue, and also take expert opinions,” he said.

The TDR model has raised a hue and cry among the citizens who fear that they may not be compensated adequately for the properties they would lose to BBMP’s road-widening project.
