Soon, you can file online complaints about poor quality of roadworks in the city. The chief minister’s special officer, Syed Khaja Mohiddin, wrote to the BBMP to make a checklist pertaining to roadworks that the layman can understand and evaluate if a particular road is of good quality. This includes construction of roads without adhering to guidelines or technical specifications. In his letter dated March 28, Mohiddin stated the state has proposed to develop a software that can be used to bring poor roadworks to the notice of the government.

Mohiddin requested the BBMP to provide a checklist to verify the quality of the new roads, information on factors affecting quality of roads, a simple drawing showing different components of the road and brief introduction on different types of roads like gravel road, tar road, etc. “The information should be furnished before April 3,” he said in the letter.

The software will have details such as name of the project, location, roadside drains, if ‘tack coats/ tar coats’ have been provided, thickness of the layers of and bitumen, overall performance of the road and other relevant details.

The public can fill in relevant details online or directly hand over the complaint at Vidhana Soudha, where a special complaint could be registered.

Action would be taken against the contractor or engineer after investigating the complaint. BBMP sources said this method would be put to practice because of several irregularities that took place in the past. Not up to mark“Not a single road laid by the BBMP is in accordance with the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress. According to the guidelines, the details of the roads should be put up on both sides of the road during the road construction,” said a source.

Sources said that this is due to the involvement of politicians. A BBMP contractor said that contractors can hardly executive 40% of the work.

“We have to give bribes to politicians and officials. So we cannot follow IRC rules completely”, a contractor said. BBMP special commissioner KR Niranjan said that the details of the road works are being put up during the construction of major roads.

“In certain places, the boards are even stolen by the miscreants,” he said.
