Ever wondered why various state governments are declaring so many tiger reserves? One reason, of course, is conservation and the other is need for funds. Sources claim that the Centre was not providing the requested funds for national parks and sanctuaries, citing non-availability of money.
All funds were being utilised for maintenance of tiger reserves, neglecting other areas. Facing dearth of funds, the state government has now come up with the ploy of declaring more forest areas as tiger reserves to sop up finance from the Centre.
A senior forest department official said the demand for funds was sought in September, but the ministry of environment and forests stated that all funds had been used for tiger reserves. “We are now taking all measures to declare as many areas as tiger reserves,” the official said. The forest department had requested Rs13.41 crore, but only Rs3.36 crore was approved for 2010-11.
“We need funds for staff welfare, anti-poaching camps, maintenance of reserves, etc. Besides getting more areas declared as tiger reserves for more funds, we are also preparing a detailed list of type of funds and sending it to the Centre for approval. The funds being allocated for some areas is not even 20% of what was needed. Further, CAMPA funds cannot be used as there are many complications in the usage. Funds between 20-70% have been allocated for the areas,” said the official.
Karnataka has 20 national parks and sanctuaries, and five tiger reserves. Areas lacking funds are Adichunchungiri Peacock Sanctuary, Arabhithittu Wildlife Sanctuary, Attiveri Bird Sanctuary, Bannerghatta National Park, BRT Wildlife Sanctuary, Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary, Kudremukh National Park, Melukotte Wildlife Sanctuary, Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, Nugu Wildlife Sanctuary, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Ranebennur Black Buck Sanctuary, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary, Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary and Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. Forest minister CH Vijaya Shankar was unavailable for comment.
