Threat emails land Bangalore man in Pune lockup

A 40-year-old Bangalorean, Sunil Nayak, has been arrested by Pune police for sending threatening emails in the name of his estranged wife.

Nayak sent emails to Hotel Westin in Pune demanding that the hotel pay him Rs2.5 crore failing which he would blow it up using RDX. He was apparently seeking revenge against his wife. The Pune police brought Nayak from Bangalore on Friday.
Nayak allegedly created an email account in the name of his wife, with whom his relationship had soured, to send the threat mails to the hotel. He wanted the ransom amount to be paid through demand draft.

Rajendra Dahale, deputy commissioner of police (cyber cell), said that the suspect, Nayak’s wife Savita, was working with a HR consultant company. During interrogation, Nayak reportedly confessed to have sent threatening emails to the cyber cell of the Mumbai police also.

Nayak said that he was working in Singapore and his wife was based in Kuwait.  The couple has a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. “All of us returned to Bangalore on January 19, after which she lodged a complaint of harassment against me with the police there, who arrested me. I was in jail for 15 days,” Nayak told reporters in police presence.

He admitted that he created the fake email account in his wife’s name, and that he randomly chose Hotel Westin from the net, with no particular reason. “I am sorry. Please, leave me,” he pleaded with the police.

Dahale said Nayak met Savita on the internet and the couple courted each other for a while before tying the knot. Nayak’s Canada-parents are not in touch with their son. Nayak had sent two emails to the hotel, the first on June 1, and the second two days later. During investigation, the police learnt that the IP address was that of a cyber cafe in Bangalore. “Our team reached Bangalore and enquired with the cyber cafe owner. Nayak was later arrested. A case has been filed against him with the Hadapsar police station under Sections of 66 (A) and 66 (C) of Information Technology Act,” Dahale said.
