These kids can teach BBMP a lesson or two

Over 2,000 kids from seven schools in the city will dedicate five days to the service of the city, creating awareness among slum dwellers, planting medicinal plants in their school campuses and participating in a clean-up drive around Koramangala. Through the initiative, called the Green Apple Week of Service, students will learn the benefits of segregation at source and the challenges and benefits of solid waste management. They will also come to know some a similar task  has been done in LR Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar slums and at Christ University campus.

The programme will include a rally to create awareness among those who do not segregate waste in slum areas and planting of about 120 saplings of medicinal plants in school campuses.

“Though the initiative is a part of the Green Apple Day of Service organised by the US Green Building  Council, we want it to be a sustainable activity that is not forgotten after a day of rallies and  street plays. Students will be taken for an excursion to see how Centre for Social Action (CSA) of Christ University segregates and manages waste,” said Gautham of Reap Benefit, an NGO which collaborates with Cooperative Housing Foundation and CSA of Christ University for the initiative.

CSA and as Reap Benefit will continue to monitor the progress of the activities in schools as well as among elders in slum areas. “By involving children in government schools, we are hoping that they will be able to influence parents who do not segregate waste,” said Anthony Raju of CSA.
