BANGALORE
Shruti Saha, executive director of Avant Garde Hospitality talks to DNA about the status of women's safety in Bangalore and what more needs to be done.
Results of a recent survey conducted and released by the Tata Strategic Management Group (TSMG) states that south Indian cities are a better bet for women looking to live a safe and secure life. Within Karnataka, Bangalore has come up trumps as the best city; yet it does not figure among the top five cities in the country in the well-being index, as well as the female security index. While Mumbai is ranked first by this survey, New Delhi is second. We spoke to a leading woman entrepreneur on the status of women’s safety in the city, and what more needs to be done. Renisha Rajendran listens to what Shruti Saha, executive director of Avant Garde Hospitality, has to say.
Compared to other Indian cities, Bangalore does offer better
security for women, but it still does not figure in the top five safest cities for women in the country, in the TSMG report. Do you feel safe when you commute within the city?
I feel scared to walk alone on the paths of Whitefield and Koramangala at night. It’s too lonely, mostly because there are so many instances of eve-teasing on the streets. It’s true that eve-teasing happens more during broad daylight than during the night hours. The night patrolling measures taken up by the state government are impressive, yet they are inadequate considering the vast stretches of lonely lanes and by-lanes in the city. The authorities concerned must tackle these dark alleys on a priority basis.
How would you rate safety in the city, especially safety for women?
That’s pretty hard to do. Being a busy employee in the central business district, I am always concerned about the safety of women employees, who work late into the night. In our organisation, we provide transport facilities for women who work at night. But the government must also do its bit in this regard. They have brought in the 11.30 pm deadline for serving alcohol in bars and pubs so that these security issues can be managed, but this has not gone down too well with youth.
What can women do to stay safe at all times?
Women have a role in ensuring their own safety. It is not just the responsibility of the authorities, but every citizen must take care of certain points to help the police along. Women need to be aware of their surroundings, and stay cautious. Women must not be too adventurous and try venturing out on their own. Safety of a woman is, at the end of the day, her own responsibility. The fact that the subject of security for women comes up ever so frequently means that we have not devised a foolproof system to ensure that women are safe.
What suggestions would you offer to women in Bangalore?
Try not to travel alone, especially at odd hours or in stretches that do not see much traffic. Do not offer lifts to strangers; nor should you be asking for a lift.
