Sahitya Akademi, as part of its diamond jubilee celebrations, is set to organise a week-long National Theatre Festival from January 16 to 21 at Guru Nanak Bhavan, Vasanthnagar. During the festival, a two-day national seminar on contemporary Indian drama would be held.

Speaking to media on Saturday, Narahalli Balasubrahamanya, Kannada representative of the academy, said that noted theatre personality Master Hirammaiah will inaugurate the festival. Dr Chandrasekhara Kambar, Kannada writer and playwright, Jnanpeeth awardee and vice president, Sahitya Akademi, would preside over the function. 

Seminal plays such as Tamasha Na Hua (Hindi, directed by Bhanu Bharti), Jamleela (Rajasthani, directed by Arjun Dev Charan), Maranayaka (Kannada, directed by H S Shivaprakash), Mohe Piya (Hindi, directed by Waman Kendre), Karimayi (Kannada in Hindi translation, directed by Chandrasekhara Kambara) and Jangtur Pangtur (Assamese, based on a folktale) would be staged during the week-long theatre festival. 

A two-day seminar on contemporary Indian drama would be inaugurated by Girish Karnad, writer and playwright focusing on writing for stage, making sense of drama, past, present and future of Indian drama and other related topics. Noted theatre personalities, such as Naseeruddin Shah, Umashree, Y Sadananda Singh, Averee Chaurey, Ananda Lal, TP Ashoka, Rojio Usham, Brahma Prakash, and others would be present at the seminar.
