Police identified the injured as Bhuvana, 23, a mentally-challenged student of a school run by the Foundation for Action, Motivation and Empowerment (FAME), India, and Madhu, 27, the van driver. The accident came a day after a school bus toppled on NH-7 near Chikkaballapur, killing a youth and injuring 29 others.

The van was ferrying five students of Delhi Public School and two from FAME back to their homes when the accident happened around 4.30 pm on a narrow street.

Bhavana was sitting on the front seat. She and her schoolmate Srinidhi, 17, were to take another vehicle home, but Madhu took them with him. The other driver had requested Madhu to drive the students home. Both the drivers were relatives, police said. The lorry driver, who fled the spot after the mishap, had failed to notice the van coming in the opposite direction.

Bhavana was admitted to the ICU of Sagar Hospital in KS Layout. She is out of danger. Driver Madhu, resident of Konanakunte Cross, fractured his arm in the accident. No other students were injured in the mishap. The KS Layout traffic police have registered a case.
