There seems to be no respite coming from ruling BJP government to end the ongoing KSRTC and BMTC employees union strike.
There seems to be no respite coming from ruling BJP government to end the ongoing KSRTC and BMTC employees union strike. Even after two days, the government was still making attempts to cut ice with the union.
Chief minister Jagadish Shettar failed to take the lead in managing the situation. Shettar maintained that transport and home minister R Ashoka would take care of the matter. Shettar explained that he was making his own efforts after consulting Ashoka on the issue, and expressed confidence over solving the issue.
However, Ashoka continued his stiff stand on the 30% salary hike issue by straightaway rejecting the demands of the employees. He also warned of invoking Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) if the situation continues in the same way.
“If salary hike were to be made it would put additional burden of Rs 649 crore per year. Further, the situation is aggravated by the diesel price hike which would add the burden of about Rs323 crore. Later, we will have to hike the price of the tickets in KSRTC and BMTC buses. I am not for adding more burden on the common people,” he said.
“On Thursday, a meeting was held with the union till 1am. I personally monitored the meeting, but talks failed as employees did not agree,” he added.
Ashoka announced Rs500 special pay for drivers and conductors who worked during the strike. He also added that the government had agreed to fulfil 10 demands of the union. The minister also made an offer to trainee staff of BMTC and KSRTC, if they come forward to do the duty in the interest of the public, they will take decision on confirming their services.
Former chief minister BS Yedyurappa, who also intervened on Friday to end the impasse, contradicted Ashoka’s stand by stating that the issues of the strike should be looked into immediately. Yedyurappa expressed his dissatisfaction over handling of the issue by the state government.
“The issue should be solved with top priority. More than a crore people are put to hardship and if the government does not react, people will get a very bad picture about the party,” he said. He further said that employees are complaining about the harassment mainly. The issue should be addressed.
“I have suggested CM Shettar to hold a conference and explain to public about the situation and conspiracies behind the sudden strike,” he added.
