Festivities just a day ahead of the bandh saved Bangaloreans from a lot of problems that a bandh normally comes with. With Ganesh Chaturthi on Wednesday, people of the city were stocked to the brim with essential commodities. They were spared of the last minute rush to keep provisions at home stocked up.
People did not scale down Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. The festivities went off without hitches. Like every year, festivities were on a large scale with fireworks and street processions in the neighbourhood.
“Fortunately, the bandh was a day after Ganesh Chaturthi. So it didn’t hinder our preparations. We had already got our supplies in place for the puja as I don’t like to leave anything till the day of the festival,” said Jaya KB, a resident of Sanjaynagar. This was the case with most households in the city.
Bhagirathi Geetha, a teacher from Banashankari, said the bandh did not affect the festivities at her home but rather came as a blessing in disguise. “Because of the errands I had to run right before and during the festival, I fell sick during Ganesh Chaturthi and was wondering whether or not to take an off but schools declared holiday today. So, I have spent the day taking rest and shaking off the festival fatigue,” she said..
Varsha Suresh, who works for an internet start-up in Indiranagar, also admitted that the bandh had no effect on her festival plans. “I worked on Ganesh Chaturthi and I am working on the bandh. It really has not affected me in anyway because I live away from home. These things don’t affect you if you have a job that requires you to work on holidays as well,” she said.
Strong believers of Ganesha, the occasion is taken very seriously in the Hegde household. “We keep our deity for 13 days; our pujas went off well on Wednesday and all supplies were available as it is the case every year. The only difference is this year everything was costly. The vendors hiked prices blaming it on higher transportation costs. We had no choice but to shell out,” said Chaya Hegde.
