In order to engage voter turnout, Facebook has introduced a Register to Vote feature for its Indian users. Through this platform, people can share status updates and individual stories on voter registration.
“We have seen the power of friends, and social sharing helps rally people around causes, build communities and increases participation. The launch of the Register to Vote feature for Facebook’s Indian users will create increased awareness of the voter registration process and influence a higher percentage of people to register to vote,” says Ankhi Das, director, public policy, Facebook India.
The latest numbers released by the Census of India show that the overwhelming demography of the country is young.
A recent report said users of social media are going to have a decisive voice in the results of the imminent general elections in India.
“We do expect this tool to produce grassroots momentum and engagement,” says Das.
In an effort to encourage more Indian citizens to vote in the upcoming elections, Facebook users can can add to their timeline as a life event that they registered to vote.
