With the BBMP issuing a public notice on mandatory segregation of garbage from October 1, plastic manufacturers have demanded that plastic shredder machines be set up at dry waste collection centres in the city.
Demonstrating the working of a plastic shredder machine, Karnataka State Plastic association (KSPA) representatives said the BBMP’s plan to completely ban plastic would affect the livelihood of thousands of people.
“The Supreme Court recommended the banning of plastic under 40 microns. However, reports of the BBMP planning to ban plastic completely have us worried. There are over 800 plastic manufacturing units in Bangalore. The BBMP should definitely take action against those companies producing plastic below 40 microns but it is not fair to completely ban plastic, including those that are biodegradable,” said Suresh N Sagar of KSPA.
Criticising the BBMP for its lethargy in tackling the Bangalore garbage crisis, KSPA representatives said plastic waste comprises less than 10% of mixed garbage. “Instead of making segregation mandatory, the BBMP is planning to ban plastic. How is that going to solve the garbage problem?” asked Vijay Kumar, another KSPA representative.
Reuse the plastic waste, instead, they suggest. “We have been asking the BBMP for quite some time now to allow us to put up plastic granule converters in dry waste collection centres. Residents can donate any kind of plastic waste which can be converted into granules. It can then be used to make plastic pots, water hose, etc,” Kumar said.
The KSPA has proposed setting up of a shredder in every ward. “The BBMP is setting up dry waste collections centres any way. We do not need too much space for a granule converter and it should be set up at every ward so that plastic can be converted and reused,” he said.
The machine costs about `1.5 lakh, he said. “The BBMP can also provide subsidies for the machines so that they can be set up. All they have to do is provide clean plastic that is not dirtied by wet waste,” he said.
