“Some of the conditions put forth by Ramdev could lead to division of the country. Ramdev’s demand for compulsory use of Hindi in daily transactions and even in technical education cannot be supported,” justice Hegde said.

Hegde, who is a member of the committee to draft the Lokpal Bill, also opposed Ramdev’s move to raise his own brigade of 11,000 volunteers with training in use of arms. “We will not support any violent agitation. Our support is only for peaceful agitations like the one being led by social activist Anna Hazare. We respect the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi,” he said.

He expressed concern about the efforts being made by most of the politicians to weaken the proposed Lokpal Bill. “It is not a healthy development for a democratic country like India in fighting corruption,” he added.
