Relentless rain over the last 24 hours claimed four lives - a woman died in Rajarajeshwari Nagar in the city on Friday morning and a couple died in Rajanukunte on the outskirts of the city as their houses collapsed in the torrential deluge, on Thursday.
Saraswathi, 43, of Bangarappanagar, died after a portion of a wall of her house fell on her, as she slept. Seriously injured, she was rushed to Rajaresjwarinagar hospital, where she died.
At Rajanukunte, Siddappa, 60, and his wife Sanjeevamma, 55, died when their rented house collapsed on them. Natives of Madhugiri taluk in Tumkur district, the couple worked as labourers near Rajankunte. Their son Ashoka survived.
The fourth victim of the rain was Adarsh C, 30, who died in Devanahalli on Thursday night after his two-wheeler rammed a parked lorry that the rider failed to see in the driving rain. Pillion rider Prakash, 28, who was injured seriously was hospitalised.
More rain today
Met officials said that in the 24 hours beginning 8.30 am on Thursday morning, 40.2mm of rainfall was recorded. The city witnessed heavy traffic jams on Thursday night with tree falls in many areas of Bangalore. Three trees fell at Koramangala and one at Girinagar. There were no complaints of water logging or flooding anywhere, claim the BBMP sources.
However, motorists had a tough time from 9pm onwards when heavy rain began lashing the city. Within minutes, the city’s main roads in the central business district were flooded and two-wheeler riders were forced to ride vehicles in shin-deep waters at several points all along Queen’s Road, Sankey Road and Guttahalli Cross Road across Bellary Road.
