The residents of PWD quarters in Vasanthnagar have a plethora of complaints: it’s not only the garbage dumped near their house (which attracts rodents), but also the stench of urine, and menace of stray dogs and laggards that they have to put up with.

The residents of quarters on 5th Cross and 6th Cross have been facing these problems for quite a while now. They were allotted the quarters only a few years ago, but the joy of it has subsided as the surroundings are in a deplorable condition. Neither the footpaths nor the roads are maintained. People dump garbage on the vacant site. The strong odour emanating from the pile of trash has made life difficult for the residents. Then there are laggards and their menace.

Supritha Kumar, a resident of the quarters, said they are happy with the other facilities, but the rat problem and the stench of urine are becoming too much to handle. Kumar added that they are so ashamed of the situation that they have reduced inviting guests to their houses.

Another resident, Jayanth Prakash, said garbage was cleaned when he called the authorities, but nothing has been done about the pest problem. He added that passers-by take the liberty of urinating on the wall behind the transformer, which only adds to the stench in the area.

PWD work inspector Amaanullah said he does his best whenever he receives a complaint about the quarters. He said he has the authority to set things right only in the quarters, adding that taking care of the locale is the responsibility of the BBMP. Palike officials could not be reached for their comments.

The afore-mentioned problems are not all that the residents of the quarters face. They complain of stray-dog menace too. The dogs chase motorists at nights. Shereen Khan, a resident, said whenever she takes her two-year-old son to the park there, she has to keep a hawk-eye on him as she is wary of dogs attacking him.
