'On screen or off it, she was so down-to-earth'

Film and TV actor Vaishali Kasaravalli’s death is not only a blow to the film industry, it marks the end of an era. A winner of many awards, her many admirers and co-actors mourned her death at the Ravindra Kalakshetra on Tuesday.  In conversation with Vidya Iyengar, Mukhyamantri Chandru, chairman of the Kannada Development Authority, who has acted along with Kasaravalli many times, pays his respects to the revered actor.

How long had you known  Vaishali Kasaravalli? Tell us what you remember.
Vaishali Kasaravalli and I shared a very cordial relationship. We were like a family. Even though she had gained so much popularity with her excellent work in films, television, theatre and costume design, she always maintained her down-to- earth personality. She was not a fake person, nor did she portray herself as someone glamourous. She won a lot of  accolades, but whether she was on screen or off it, she was just the same smiling person.

Is she a role model for today’s youngsters?
Definitely. She was completely involved in her work and managed both her home and her career well. So not just for youngsters, she is a role model to all modern women too. She is an ideal example for the younger generation and has shown that one can always balance work and family. It is a quality that women must learn from her.

In your opinion, what is her biggest contribution?
Her acting abilities were impeccable. She could evoke emotion in the audience. She was able to pull off the most challenging role with perfect ease. She was able to make use of Uttara Kannada as well as Dakshin Kannada, in her serials like Muthina Thorna and Moodula Mane. Her works of translation were much appreciated. Her contribution to the Kannada language and culture is immense. She was always happy to help without discriminating against anyone. Her friendly nature and her eagerness to lend a helping hand will always be remembered by all known to her.

What is your most memorable experience with Vaishali?
The roles she played in Ganeshan Maduve, Gowri Ganesha, Kalyanamantappa, were excellent. Her ability to deliver dialogue in important scenes came to her naturally, and her roles were often so realistic. It is probably because she got into the skin of the role that she was such a natural
actor.

Do you think there will be another Vaishali?
Her death is very unfortunate. However, such things are not in our hands. Film, television and theatre have lost a great, talented artist.
