North Karnataka celebrates Kharge's elevation

People of North Karnataka, particularly of Hyderabad-Karnataka region, are elated over Mallikarjun Kharge getting the charge of railway ministry.

A Gulbarga resident and state secretary of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Arun Surwar, told dna the All India Congress Committee showed its respect towards the people of the region by giving the portfolio to Kharge.

NSUI national delegate Rajat Ullagaddimath said Kharge’s elevation was the Congress high command’s answer to those who tried to project the party as anti-Dalit after the veteran politician was denied the chief minister’s post about a month ago.

Jana Sangrama Parishad president Raghavendara Kushtagi said he was hoping that Kharge takes forward the long-pending railway projects in the state. He said Kharge should take a cue from former railway ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mamata Banerjee, who introduced many trains to their states during their tenure.

Sources in Hubli district unit of Congress said they were planning a grand felicitation for Kharge. Pro-Dalit organisations too are making similar plans to honour their son of soil.
