No ban on bar girls, police tell Karnataka high court
The affidavit said police officers were told to act only against illegal bars and restaurants holding live bands and obscene dance. Justice Mohan Shanthana Goudar adjourned the case to July 18.
The Bangalore police on Tuesday clarified in an affidavit filed before the high court that they had not prevented women from working in bars.

The affidavit was filed on a petition challenging an ‘oral ban’ on bar girls. The petition was filed by Naziya and two others, previously employees of Chef Inn Regency Bar and Restaurant in Domlur.
The bar had terminated their services following a reported oral instruction by the commissioner. The petitioners contended that women have a right to be employed in bars.
Nazia and others pointed out in the petition that the police commissioner had on May 31, 2011, orally instructed his officers to close down bars and restaurants where women, employed as barmaids, had been engaging in illegal activities. The petitioners were fired following the order. They contended that no notice was issued to them, nor an opportunity provided to hear them. They also submitted that they had made representations to the police to allow them to work.
