BC Mylarappa, professor of sociology, is said to be pressuring the higher education minister for over a month to get himself appointed for the post, sources in the higher education department said.

BU vice-chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev had recently approached the higher education department seeking deputation of IAS officers for the registrar posts. Mylarappa, who came to know about the vice-chancellor’s request, managed to get a former high court judge with Bharatiya Janata Party links to recommend his candidature, sources said.

“Even a former MLC who is a senior RSS functionary has thrown his weight behind Mylarappa’s candidature,” the source said.Mylarappa was a BJP candidate from Pulikeshi Nagar in the last assembly elections.

He was indicted for misappropriation of funds when he was director of the distance education department in Bangalore University. An inquiry by the varsity syndicate had recommended action against him. The proceedings were dropped after Mylarappa approached the Supreme Court.

Mylarappa had lobbied hard when the Mysore University vice-chancellor’s post was vacant. He was in the running for the VC posts of Bangalore and Tumkur varsities too. The respective search committees dropped his name due to his controversial record.
