A two-day old girl was sold off by her mother to a sweeper of Lady Goshen Hospital in the city for Rs10,000. The sweeper later sold the baby to a family in Kerala for Rs22,000.

The Dakshina Kannada police have arrested the mother, Yashoda, and four others. According to superintendent of police, Abhishek Goyal, “The child has been handed over to the custody of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Apart from Yashoda, the arrested include Pramila (sweeper), Champa, Gulabi and Sukanya.”

The arrested have been charged under IPC 317 and 109 provisionally. A complaint was lodged at Venoor police station and an investigation team has been dispatched to Mangalore.According to CWC chairperson, Asha Nayak, arrangements have been made to take care of the child.

“It is shocking how a mother can sell off her baby for money. I thank the police for timely action,” she said.
