Karnataka government on Thursday finally gave its consent to increase autorickshaw permits in the city from the present 85,000 to 1,25,000. The decision was made after several pleas were made in this regard by associations of autorickshaw drivers.

The government, however, introduced certain regulations for the issue of permits — only those drivers who already hold a driving licence will be granted permits; additional permits will not be issued to a driver who already holds an auto permit.

Besides, the new autorichshaws should be environment-friendly, and not make for even more noise or air pollution. The rickshaws should have full stroke engines and LPG kits, and their meters should be digital. The rickshaws will also be painted green.
