Model layout needs better facilities

Kalyan Nagar, formed as a model layout by the BDA, retains much of its intended charm and calm. It emerged 14th in the rank of 28 most liveable localities of Bangalore according to the DNA-AZ survey.

The locality abutting the outer ring road (ORR) has green surroundings and is one of the fastest growing suburbs. Its easy accessibility via the ORR is the greatest plus point it earns.

“The co-operation with which the work here is carried out drives us to uphold our claim of a model locality,” says Padmanabha Reddy, ward corporator.

 The practice of bringing awareness among people by the Lions Club has promoted a sense of cultivating cleanliness in the locality. The civic leader believes a locality as good or bad as its people. 

“The problem is with us the residents. We should co-ordinate to help civic officials. By not littering the place, we can help ourselves,” says Col Varghese, estate manager of Sena Vihar.

But there are pinpricks along the way. “The BMTC service in this area is not up to the mark. No sufficient number of buses ply to the centre of the city, making it a hassle for commuters who depend on public transport,” says Tim Foley, a resident and member of Karnataka Rugby Football Union.

 Roads are good but need maintenance. Street lights too need mending. The park development that started in the 1st Block is still dragging.

“The garbage disposal arrangement that we have been using for the past 12 years is one of the best in Bangalore. We convert bio-degradable waste and put it in use as manure,” says CM Subbaiah, president of Kalyan Nagar Residents’ Welfare association. 

In fact, this was one community work that proved exemplary for others. The garbage disposal is so well done that many people have come here to study how it is being carried out.

 “One major problem is the drainage in our locality, as it gets clogged and the authorities aren’t prompt to hold frequent checks to clear it up. It has become a dumping zone for the workers at the flyover that is being constructed on the ring road. Also, acute shortage of water makes it difficult for us to manage with the household activities. The water that we get on
alternate days is muddy, and not feasible to use” says Indresh, a resident.
