A wrong road sign put up by the board throws traffic out of gear; ambulances rushing patients to Nimhans get stuck in the middle of nowhere.
The dismay caused by slow-moving traffic is something Bangaloreans have gotten used to, and the construction of Namma Metro has only helped in accepting this dark reality.
But what comes as a shock is the unannounced road blocks and diversions that lead to greater commuting inconvenience.
This was exactly what happened on the stretch of Hosur Road, connecting Wilson Garden to Kidwai Memorial Cancer Hospital. Most of the commuters coming towards the city from Bannerghatta Road were stranded on this stretch due to unexpected blockade.
The culprit behind the road mishap was a simple sign board that said ‘Road blocked due to BWSSB work’. The board fixed by Bangalore Water Supply And Sewerage Board (BWSSB) was quite misleading because it gave commuters an impression that it is only the flyover that was blocked. Most of them took the road along the flyover only to find the road cut wide open by the workers. This resulted in a massive traffic jam as vehicles came in from both Bannerghatta Road and Madivala.
“I realised that the road was blocked only after I reached the spot. The traffic police diverted my car into Nimhans and I was lost. Only after a long search, I managed to find my way out ,” said Satish Patel, who came to attend the conference that was being held in Nimhans convention centre, a few metres away from the road block.
BWSSB officials have started digging the road from Nimhans Hospital entrance to Nimhans convention centre in the first phase of the work. The traffic has been diverted through Nimhans taking the commuters to Wilson Garden, 10th Main through Someshwarnagar, Deputy commissioner of police (traffic east) BA Muthanna, who was at the spot regulating the traffic, said that the confusion will be cleared once the commuters get used to the arrangement. He also said that the BWSSB and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike have assured that the work will be finished within the deadline.
