Of late, several instances of schools operating in dingy premises have been reported in the city.
The case in point is the MGES English High School in JC Nagar, which has been slyly operating in a two-bedroom house since 1962, as reported on Sunday in this newspaper. The school will soon face disaffiliation, for it has been housing about 250 students, up to class 10 in a dingy, two-bedroom premise.
The deputy director of state department of public instructions (DDPI) of Bangalore North district has recommended the department commissioner to withdraw the affiliation and also issued a notice to the school on Monday, seeking an explanation.
“We have given a time frame of seven days for the school to respond. They need to give an explanation for running the school in such a shoddy condition. Based on the report submitted by the block education officer, I recommended the commissioner for withdrawal of recognition of this school,” said TC Chandraiah, DDPI Bangalore North district.
Referring to the report carried out by this newspaper on the plight of MGES, Chandraiah said “I don’t understand how the matter escaped our notice. We have instructed our local officers to look into this.” The case of MGES has been an eye-opener. The department will conduct a study of all state government aided and unaided schools.
“I will ask my officers to conduct a study of all schools in Bangalore North district about the venue and infrastructure and also check if the guidelines are being followed,” he said.
Any school found violating the department rules in any manner will be recommended for disaffiliation, he said.
Meanwhile, when parents approached MGES to get their children’s transfer certificate (TC), the school refused. “We don’t want to send our children to this school. We want our department officials to help us get the TC,” said Tanuja K, a parent.
