A second-year medical student of MS Ramaiah Medical College allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room after she was reportedly suspended from the institution on Tuesday.

Identifying the deceased as Durgesh Kanwar Shekhawat, daughter of Hanuman Singh Shekhawat of Madhya Pradesh, the police said she apparently took the extreme step after the authorities had suspended her for six months from the college.

She was also suspended from the hostel for three months.

At the time of filing this report, the students were staging a dharna in front of the hostel, demanding to meet the college authorities.

They wanted an explanation from the college regarding the circumstances that led to the suicide.

Earlier, her friends reportedly told the police that she was caught cheating in an internal examination three months ago.

The college principal reportedly scolded Durgesh in the open class on Tuesday. She did not attend the rest of the classes, but returned to the hostel.

Other students saw Durgesh hanging from a ceiling fan in her third floor room in the hostel around 8 pm, and informed the authorities.

Following the incident, students demanded to meet the principal at the scene of suicide. They also alleged that four students were caught cheating in the exam, but only two were suspended.

The student’s relatives have been informed of the incident, the police said, adding that they were investigating the case.
