If there is one festival that is known to cause fire hazards, it is Deepavali. However, with Christmas fast approaching, there is need for caution — the decorations used in homes at this time of year too could pose danger.

If light strings or bulbs are not properly checked, excessive heating could cause fire. Often accidents happen because of sheer negligence or ignorance.

Overloading the extension cord by putting too many plugs in it is also potentially dangerous. Mishaps often occur because of lack of attention to the details.

“It is advisable to use light strings with a safety mark. Such marks certify that engineers have tested samples for risk of fire, electric shock and other hazards. It is important to follow instructions when using light strings and other electrical items,” says Manish Bhatnagar, director, sales and marketing, emerging markets, Underwriters Laboratories.

“Cracked sockets, loose or bare wires and loose connections can cause serious electric shocks, and set off fire. A short circuit could be result when an electrical socket is loaded with too many appliances,” warns Bhatnagar.

Meanwhile, different groups in the city found ways to celebrate Christmas by being with those otherwise deprived and lonely.
