Management guru known for his love for traditions

The legendary management guru and founder of Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) and Padma Bhushan awardee NS Ramaswamy died on Monday night around 7.45 pm. He was 87.

Prof Ramaswamy was a legend in the field of management and during his ten years as IIM-B director he took management studies into sectors such as transport, public administration, education, rural development and power.

Born on March 2, 1926 in Thrissur, Kerala, Ramaswamy began his career as a professor of management at Bajaj Institute of Management of Bombay University in 1952. He did his BSc and BE from Madras University then post graduation from Glasgow, Lehigh and Stanford. After his retirement from IIM-B, he came back in 2006 as one of the Board of Directors .

Ramaswamy, who is known by all for his sense of social service, love for Indian traditions and nature. He had set up the Centre for Action, Research and Technology for Man, Animal and Nature (CARTMAN) soon after his retirement in 1983.

His love for the Indian traditions and culture saw him setting up the Indian Heritage Academy, which conducts programmes on yoga, meditation, music, dance, besides lectures on philosophy, culture and leadership development. His excellence in management field saw Ramaswamy being appointed as a national professor by the central government.

In 2006, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for social service. In 2011, Ramaswamy was appointed chief mentor at Indian Institute of Business Studies (IIBS). During his life term, Ramaswamy has served as the chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India, Committee on Meat Industry, Centre for Development Education, QRT Animal; acted as a consultant for the Airport Authority of India, ministry of non conventional energy resources and as director of IIM-B and National Institute of Industry Engineering.    inbox@dnaindia.net
