When the woman spurned her colleague’s repeated attempts for an intimate relationship, he took revenge by raping and murdering her eight-year-old daughter at Garebavipalya in Madivala, police said on Friday, a day after the crime was committed.
The man, Gopal K, aged 38, was arrested, the police said, adding that he had confessed to the crime. He also reportedly told investigators that he plotted the crime after the victim’s mother angered him by her repeated refusal for an intimate relationship.
The accused and the girl’s mother were working in a dye manufacturing unit. The victim, Savitri (name changed), had gone to a neighbourhood grocery shop on Thursday, but never returned home. “Her family came to the police station on Thursday evening and informed that the child had gone missing,” inspector Purushottam ML of Madivala police said.
Police got a lead into the missing case from Indrani’s brother, Karthik, aged 5. He had seen Gopal, his mother’s colleague at the dye manufacturing unit, offering a chocolate to her.
When detained for interrogation Gopal told the investigators that he had sold the girl to a group from Tamil Nadu. However, on further quizzing, he reportedly confessed to the crime and led the police to the scene, where the body was found.
Police said Gopal smashed the child’s head with a boulder after she threatened him that she would tell the matter to her mother.
Gopal reportedly told the police that he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crime.
“A brutal act committed by a filthy mind,” deputy commissioner of police (south-east division) said.
