Two days after chief minister BS Yeddyurappa offered an olive branch to governor HR Bhardwaj, BJP leader Arun Jaitley met Bhardwaj to broker peace between the two.
Yeddyurappa will meet the governor on Friday to invite him to address the joint legislative session, which is scheduled to commence on January 6.
Jaitley, who shares good relations with Bhardwaj thanks to their long innings in the legal profession, tried to put it to good use as he called on the governor early on Thursday. Jaitley requested the governor to bury the bitter past in his relationship with the chief minister.
He also provided clarifications on the issues raised by the governor in his letters addressed to the chief minister on illegal mining, land scam and action against Reddy brothers.
Jaitley requested the governor to act with restraint and assured him on behalf of the chief minister that none of the ministers would, in future, make derogatory remarks against him. Nobody would come in the way of his constitutional duties.
He pleaded with the governor not to go to the media and embarrass the government on day-to-day developments and programmes. It is not good for two constitutional heads to go on confrontation path, he said.
Jaitley also advised the chief minister to be courteous and respectful in dealing with the governor. He asked him to meet the governor frequently to avoid any misunderstanding between the two.
Jaitley, along with MLC Lehar Singh, headed to Raj Bhavan around 7.30 am and held discussions with the governor for more than one-and-a-half hours.
After returning from Raj Bhavan, Jaitley met the chief minister and urged him not act in a manner that might provoke the governor.
“HR Bhardwaj is head of the constitutional authority in the state and he has to work according to the constitutional needs. I will not comment on this attitude, but he should act with restraint,” he added.
Jaitley also cautioned the Reddy brothers not to provoke the governor. He attacked the CBI saying the UPA government was misusing the agency.
