Large dustbins for KR Market

As part of its efforts to ensure segregation of garbage at source, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon set up large dustbins in Krishna Rajendra Market to separate waste.

“As a start, we will set up three large dustbins in KR Market. One will be for old and waste vegetables. The second  one will be for other wet waste. The third will hold dry waste. The health officer will be in charge of educating the  vendors on waste segregation. If this project clicks, we will implement it in all the markets in the city,” said BBMP  commissioner Rajneesh Goel.

While this is not the first time that BBMP has attempted to implement a project like this, it is the first time it has taken steps to educate the vendors. Earlier, BBMP tied up with a company that produces biogas to set up a biogas plant in KR Market at the cost of Rs1.02 crore and provided 450 sq m of space for the same.

The company was responsible for constructing the plant and operating it for three years on a contract basis. BBMP  estimated the plant could generate around 500 units of power daily with around five tonnes of waste and that it could  provide power to 250 street lights around the market area. Wet waste generated by hotels around the market was  also supposed to be used by the plant.

The new project to be implemented by the BBMP seems more sustainable. “We can generate a lot of manure from the wet waste that goes into the bins and waste vegetables can be fodder for animals. Wet waste will go to Chintamani while the other waste will be segregated and recycled,” the commissioner said.

If the project at KR Market becomes a success, the BBMP will implement the same in other markets across the city.
