Although Kuvempu is respected by the entire state of Karnataka, the state of the Mahakavi Kuvempu Road in Rajajinagar, may not reflect this. For the past two years, thanks to the Metro work, the road has been pockmarked with potholes and it has literally become a hazard for those using it.
Exhausted by their attempts to persuade authorities to repair the road, over 300 residents of Rajajinagar area, protested against the apathy shown by BBMP and BMRCL, with regard to repairing the road.
Participants, including veteran freedom fighter HS Doreswamy, students, senior citizens and women from surrounding areas took to the streets on Tuesday. They vented vent their anger against the BBMP and BMRCL for not asphalting the road.
According to residents, for the past two years the road has been in sorry state. “The BBMP had asked the BMRCL to repair the roads by September 2011. It has been over a year now and nothing has been done yet. Every single day there is a jam or someone narrowly missing an accident,” said Ravinandan, a resident participating in the protest.
HG Jayalakshmi, member of Save Bangalore Committee (SBC) said, “The fact that neither BBMP nor BMRCL have done anything to repair the road shows the callous attitude of the authorities to the problem of citizens.”
She added that the BMRCL representative, who met the protesters, said that the high-powered committee could not sit for a meeting to decide asphalting of the road. “It is a cruel joke that the authorities are playing on the residents. Do they have any idea what people have had to go through over the last two years? What were they doing over the period?” she asked.
Prathinha Kumari, leader off Rajajinagar unit of SBC said that over a month ago a memorandum was submitted to the authorities with at least 1000 signatures. But nothing came of it. With the tolerance of the public wearing out, they have warned they will block the road.
