The KSLU is preparing the report by dividing colleges into four zones — Green, Orange, Red and Black.
Here is a wake up call for state law colleges that are not functioning properly and not up to stipulated standards.
The Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) will release a status report on each law college in the state.
The KSLU is conducting a study and on the basis of its report, the university will bring out a status report of law colleges in Karnataka. Once the report is out, the colleges that are deemed not up to the mark will be derecognised.
Officials from the university told DNA that most of the work had already been completed and the report is expected to be out by next month.
“We have already prepared 200 pages of the report and material related to some colleges has yet to be added,” said JS Patil, vice-chancellor KSLU.
According to officials, the main intention behind this report is to find out the academic status of each college.
Currently 92 colleges are functioning across the state, under KSLU. “Through this report we want to improve legal education in the state and also to create a road map of legal education,” said Patil.
The KSLU is preparing the report by dividing colleges into four zones — Green, Orange, Red and Black. The colleges that provide quality education will fall in the Green zone. Those that are providing good education, but need to be improved will fall into the Orange zone. The colleges that are bad will fall into the Red zone, meaning dangerous. Colleges that are in the Red zone will be given a caution and they must improve their condition within three years.
The last is the Black zone, and the worst colleges that fall into this zone will be derecognised. “The university does not have the right to derecognise any institution though they are affiliated to it. So, once the report is final we will recommend to the government to derecognise the colleges that fall into the Black zone,” said the vice-chancellor.
The university is preparing the report with more than 20 yardsticks. “We have fixed parameters like library facilities, faculty and their academic qualifications, buildings, research and publication, seminars and workshops conducted by the institution, etc. Along with these, we are also considering the academic performance of students,” said Patil. Each of the above questions will get five marks, he added.
The Karnataka Knowledge Commission has asked the university to provide a copy of the report. “We will also send them a copy,” said Patil.
