The Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Thursday decided to maintain its separate identity, but declared its support to Narendra Modi as the BJP prime ministerial candidate.
Addressing pressmen on Thursday, Yeddyurappa dismissed reports that his close aide Lehar Singh Siroya was in New Delhi for talks with the BJP central leadership about the possible merger of the KJP.
“Leher Singh may have gone to Delhi on his personal work; I have not sent anybody to Delhi,” he said.
The KJP’s decision at the state executive on Thursday comes a day after its core committee meeting, where several of its leaders wanted KJP to retain its identity but be part of NDA and support Modi.
The KJP executive has resolved that it would support Modi in the Lok Sabha elections in the interest of country’s security and development.
“KJP will retain its identity and will not merge with any other political party including BJP,” Yeddyurappa said.
On the pre-poll alliance for the Lok Sabha elections, he said the two parties would share seats on the basis of their performance in the last assembly elections.
“If KJP and BJP come together, we will be able to win a minimum of more than 15 to 16 seats,” the former chief minister said, adding however, that he would not contest the Lok Sabha elections.
