Karnataka law university students get together to lend vision to the blind

A group of students of Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) have decided to do their own bit to lend vision to the less fortunate blind men and women.

These students of the university have agreed to donate their eyes after their death.

The vice-chancellor of the varsity had put up a notice on the college notice board about the importance and significance of eye donation, following which a large number of students decided to donate their eyes.

Most of the students have  already registered with the local eye bank.

Not just the students at the campus, university authorities have asked all colleges affiliated to it to encourage students to donate their eyes.

“We are happy with the response that we have received from the students,”said JS Patil, vice-chancellor, KSLU. 

“We have written letters to all affiliated colleges regarding this, and quite a few of them have responded positively. Of course, it is not mandatory, but the response has been really good,” he said.
The university is planning to sign an MoU with eye banks across the state to drive the initiative.

“In Hubli, to help interested students register themselves for eye  donation, we have signed an MoU with MN Joshi Eye Bank. In the same way, we are planning to sign agreements with all the eye banks in the state so that all students of the university get a chance to pledge their eyes.” said Patil.

The varsity has more than 17,000  students studying in various colleges affiliated to it.

The KSLU is also organising a state-wide campaign to create awareness on the importance of eye donation. The campaign will provide facility for spot registration, with the aid of an eye bank representative, who will take part in the movement.

Talking about their initiative, Patil said, “I became keen on this project after I visited the Joshi Eye Bank and I realised that thousands of blind people are waiting for the right retina. It was then that I discussed the issue with my colleagues, and we decided to take this step forward.”

“I want my students and the university to be role models for the entire state,” the vice-chancellor added.
