While martial art forms like karate and kung fu have long been a favourite with kids, currently, Kalaripayattu, “the art of combat”, that has its root in Kerala is gaining in popularity among children in
Bangalore.
The holistic approach of the Kalari training is aimed at achieving the ultimate coordination of and control over mind and body. It is one such martial art form which draws inspiration from the raw power, majestic strength and instinctive fighting techniques of animals like the lion and tiger.
According to Rajan Mullaratt, Kalari expert, Kalari Academy of Performing Arts, “The inherent beauty of this art form lies in the harmonious synergy of art and science. It instils a sense of discipline in children and can even be therapeutic.” He added,
“While it was originally considered to be a form of combat, it has now evolved in to an art form.”
Describing this singular martial art form, Ranjan said, “The techniques used in Kalaripayattu are unique; they imitate animals in combat. The movements are fluid and they break the rigidity of the body. Kalaripayattu also includes the marma therapy, a form of therapy designed to manipulate superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function and promote relaxation and well-being.”
This martial art form harmonises the biological system of the body. It stimulates energy pathways and improves blood circulation and awakens the self-healing mechanism of the body which eventually leads to a healthy life. It is a positive approach to good health. It promotes and rejuvenates the body and mind.
“Six years is an ideal age to enrol a child for these classes. Before that, kids don’t have the mental and the physical toughness to undergo the rigorous training. Kalaripayattu promises a strong body and focused mind. Children become more alert and are able to express themselves through this art form. This breaks the monotony of their school curriculum. Also it helps fight problems like obesity,” said Rajan.
He believes teaching children is a unique experience. They are inquisitive, interested about the theologies associated with the art form and have no inhibitions.
