Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh’s provocative statement about IITs and IIMs not being world-class seems to have riled the chairman of prime minister’s scientific advisory council, CNR Rao.

When asked to comment on Ramesh’s statement, Prof Rao said, “He is a ‘bachha’; I would not like to comment on what he has said.” Rao said that none of the Indian institutions, including the IISc and the IITs, could match the best in the world.

The professor cited the decline in the quality of research done in the country as the reason for Indian institutions faring badly when compared to foreign universities.
