It’s squall time, keep off trees in South: Meteorology department

The weather mechanism has changed over the skies in South Karnataka, said the director of Indian Meteorology Department B Puttana.

The air-cyclonic circulation over Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border and Karnataka-Kerala border are causing these squally winds resulting in rains and thunder storms.

“The wind speed on Friday was 45 kmph, less than that of Thursday. Wind speed changes due to the height of the clouds and the depth of the clouds. When these two factors keep changing, the wind speed also fluctuates,” said Puttana. Due to this variation, the winds in Bangalore might uproot several trees and it could be dangerous for people to take shelter under trees when it rains.

He also said that the rains on Friday were moderate to heavy as within half and hour, the rain fall recorded was 2.5cm which is termed heavy spell in meteorology. He also raised concerns about low-lying areas which could be affected due to such intermittent heavy spells each day.

However, this weather will continue for another 48 hours, confirmed Puttana.
