Here’s how to dump trash

To bring a permanent solution to the garbage problem in the city, BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel on Saturday issued a public notice, urging people to follow different ways of garbage disposal.

In the notice, he mentioned six ways of dealing with different kinds of wastes. According to the notice, a normal household mainly generates wet waste, dry waste, garden waste, sanitary waste, rubbish (also called inerts) and household hazardous waste. All occupiers shall keep all types of waste until collected by authorised persons.

Goel said that people should not mix wet waste with any other type of waste. Wet waste shall be handed over every day to specified wet-waste collectors at specified times. The BBMP will see to it that the waste is collected from’s people’s doorstep. In case of narrow approach, the waste will be collected at the nearest common access point.

The notices also said that the wet waste should not be handed over in plastic bags and should be unloaded directly into the garbage van. The BBMP chief also directed waste collectors to refuse to collect wet waste if offered in plastic bags.

The public shall retain unwanted dry waste within their premises to be handed over to specified dry waste collectors on specified days of the week or month to be intimated ward-wise to all occupiers. Public may also personally deliver dry waste to any of the dry waste collection centres (DWCCs).

Garden waste will be collected from residential premises on specified days of the week or month by authorised persons. It may be delivered by residents to the nearest specified park for decentralised composting. Rubbish and inerts will be collected on request against charges to be specified. Inerts lying uncollected for over a month will be removed by the BBMP during monthly ward-wise collecting drives and the cost of such removal will be collected along with property tax from the occupier of the site.
Sanitary waste from individual family occupiers may be handed over daily along with the wet waste suitably wrapped in newspaper and marked with red cross.

Household hazardous wastes shall be retained within the premises until collected quarterly or on specified dates.  No wastes of any kind shall be deposited at any time by residents on the streets, public spaces or vacant sites.
