The state government’s decision of withdrawing the syndicate members nominated by the previous BJP government in universities is taking a political turn. It has invited the wrath of academicians, who have termed it an insult to them. On Saturday some syndicate members of state universities nominated by the earlier government were told that their memberships had been withdrawn.

Prof MS Thimmappa, former vice-chancellor of Bangalore University, questioned the act: “A university is an autonomous body, and it is not that everything should be changed because of a change in the government. Even if the government is acting as per law, courtesy demands that they explain what made the members to lose their posts. I want to ask the authorities, are you not insulting the members by this?”

Prof Siddappa, senior academician and a former vice-chancellor of the BU, said that the way the government was acting did not look right.

Former higher education minister DH Shankara Murthy said the way the government is acting is not correct.
