Govt formulates 15-point programme to improve SSLC results

The department of public instructions is taking steps to ensure that the number of students in the state who pass Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exam improves by about 10% over the previous year.

To achieve the target, the department has devised a 15-point programme that asks for greater participation from the teachers and the school. The department has aimed at improving the result at least by 6% at district level and by 10% at state level. A circular in this regard has been issued recently.

An official from the department noted that the SSLC exams, to be held in March/April 2012, would have the third batch of students who would be writing the exam as per the revised pattern.

Steps  to reach target

1. Improve over-all pass percentage by 6% at district level and by 10% at state level as compared with the result of the academic year 2010-2011.
2. Use maths and English teachers on a shift basis so that they remain available to teach at schools where there is a need. In case of shortage of teachers, services of the retired teachers may be used.
3. Local officials have been asked to conduct workshops regularly for teachers of each subject in each taluk.
4. Remedial teaching has been suggested for slow learners.
5. Teachers should maintain individual files of each student, in which they should mention his/her learning ability.
6. Special classes have to be conducted before school hours for students who had scored less than 40% in the previous exam.
7. Teachers should conduct group studies wherein bright students as well as poor performers should be involved.
8. Classroom teaching should be student-oriented and should involve quizzes, discussions. Activity-based learning should be given importance.
9. Teachers should make students write more and errors such as spelling mistakes should be rectified on the spot.
10. All subject teachers, excluding Hindi teachers, should be trained at taluk level for five days every month.
11. Teachers of maths, science and social science should be given computer-aided training.
12. All the teachers have to adopt class 10 students and give them special attention.
13. Parents-teachers meeting should be held once every month.
14. Personal counselling must be held for the SSLC students and CD-ROMs should be used for teaching.
15. Teachers have to prepare model question papers and conduct exams every month.
