With Supreme Court’s decision on Cauvery loaded against the state, various Kannada organisations on Friday took to streets and urged chief minister Jagadish Shettar to not to release water to Tamil Nadu.
Over 30 members of Praveen Shetty faction of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) were arrested by police after they tried to lay siege on chief minister’s house ‘Krishna’ . They threatened to intensify their protest if water was released to Tamil Nadu.
Praveen Shetty said, “The state government should stick to its decision to not to release water to Tamil Nadu, despite Supreme Court ruling.”
There is no water for residents in Mandya, Mysore and in Bangalore, then how can we release it to neighbouring state. The Central government has always provided step-motherly treatment towards Karnataka on Cauvery issue, Shetty said. The procession by Praveen Shetty faction began from Film Chamber of Commerce, around 5.30 pm, and 200 protesters tried to lay siege of chief minister’s house. They tried to barge into ‘Krishna’ premises after scaling the barricades. Additional forces were rushed to handle the crowd. The protesters were detained by Sadashivanagar police and released around 8 pm.
Shetty said, “From Saturday onwards we will stop the screening of Tamil movies in theatres, airing of Tamil TV channels and distribution of Tamil newspapers.” “We also demand all the ministers at the central government should resign immediately,” he added.
Meanwhile the Narayana Gowda faction of KRV tried to lay siege of Raj Bhavan, in protest against Supreme Court’s decision. Around 6:30 pm, they began a torch-lit procession from Corporation Circle, but they were stopped by police at Mysore Bank Circle.
The faction chief TA Narayana Gowda said, “The Supreme Court has taken a unilateral decision, without verifying facts, and hence this cannot be followed.”
The state government should remain steadfast on its decision, taken on September 19, to not to release water to Tamil Nadu. Though it would amount to the violation of apex court order, the Shettar government should be prepared to face the consequences, Gowda added.
