BANGALORE
The ABVP passed four resolutions, including one calling for creating awareness among students about environment and another espousing agitation against the corrupt UPA government at the Centre.
The four-day 56th national conference of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) concluded on Tuesday, after passing several resolutions, political and apolitical.
The ABVP passed four resolutions, including one calling for creating awareness among students about environment and another espousing agitation against the corrupt UPA government at the Centre.
The meet also resolved to protest against the commercialisation of education and to celebrate the 151st birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya across the country.
“Being a national student organisation, it is our responsibility to create awareness among students about environment. We will soon frame an action plan on this issue,” said Umesh Datta Sharma, national secretary (Himachal), ABVP.
“We have decided to celebrate Sir M Visvesvaraya’s 151st birth anniversary across the nation, as there is a need to make students aware of him and his contributions,” said N Ravi Kumar, national secretary (Karnataka) ABVP.
The ABVP will hold an agitation against corruption in the UPA government across the nation from January 6, 2011.
“We will organise public discussions, conduct protests against the recent scams like 2G spectrum and Commonwealth Games. We will stage a mass agitation against the UPA government,” said Sharma.
He also said that the agitation was not just against the scams, but also against the three important personalities in the UPA dispensation.
“All the recent scams have happened despite the prime minister being in the know of them. AICC president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi are running the central government by remote control. We would like to ask them how these scams took place without coming to their notice. The purpose behind our agitation is to find answers to these questions,” said Sharma.
“There is no bias. If the member of parliament from Bangalore South, HN Ananth Kumar, is involved in the scam, let them conduct an inquiry. Let them take action as per the law if he is proved guilty,” he said.
“In the past few years, education has become a difficult thing to acquire for many poor meritorious students. We have decided to focus on this and will stage an agitation against the commercialisation of education at all the levels,” he said.
The ABVP leaders said that education should be made compulsory till the college-level by extending the scope of the Right to Education Act. “There is a need for quality education and both the Centre and state governments should give equal importance to it,” Sharma said.
