All shops in the locality had downed their shutters on Monday and fear was palpable in the area. Police personnel continued to be positioned in the area.

Ali was killed opposite Nutan Hair Saloon. Kumar, the saloon owner, said Ali was standing outside when he was attacked.

“I was inside the shop. When I came out, I saw Ali in a pool of blood. I did not see the killers,” he said.

Another resident, Mehboob Ali Khan, a glass trader, also feigned ignorance. “I did not see anything. I just heard about the incident from others,” he said.

Banashankari police inspector R Govindaraju said “During elections, he was provided with security. If he wanted to continue, he should have written to the home department. We are looking out for Maheem, the main suspect behind the murder.” After becoming a corporator, Ali wanted to be addressed as Mohammed Ali and not Diwana Ali. He claimed to have shed his notorious ways and indulged in a lot of charity.
