Dr Srividhya Raghavendran, personal physician, NationWide Primary Healthcare Services, said that Indians have reason to pay attention to their hearts as the country has a bad track record on heart-related problems.
“The incidences of heart disease have been highest in India among countries across the world. Our country, with a population of more than a billion, accounted for about 60% of the world’s heart disease cases in 2010. The disease affects both men and women,” she said.
According to Srividhya, Indian cooking is one of the prime culprits behind heart-related problems. “Indian preparations involve excessive use of oil and ghee, that are high on cholesterol. When such food is consumed, cholesterol deposits stick to the walls of arteries, thereby reducing their blood-carrying capacity,” she added.
Dr Ramamurthy Bingi, head of the department of cardiology, BGS Global Hospitals, said that uncontrolled stress can also lead to heart disease. “South East Asian population is more vulnerable to succumb to heart related problems. Uncontrolled stress, elevated cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and physical inactivity are factors. People should keep away from junk food and if you diabetic, you should take care not to put on weight,” he said.
Bingi also warned that many patients suffering from heart attacks, sometimes fail to recognise or entirely ignore the symptoms. “Many think they have acidity. If you are over 30 years of age and are suffering from pain above your navel, then you should get it checked immediately with a doctor,” he said.
The cardiologist said that family history was also a factor to watch out for. “There are standard factors that cause heart attacks - diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and family history. If you are suffering from chest pains and there is a family history of heart problems, it is best to immediately consult a doctor. But essentially you need to follow a balanced diet and exercise a lot. Those who smoke are more susceptible than those who don’t,” he said.
