Eloped girl’s family ends life in Bangalore

Three members of an eloped girl’s family committed suicide at their house in Hennur on Thursday.

The police said the head of the family, Elumalai, 47, ended his life by hanging from a ceiling fan. His wife Muniyamma, 37, who found her husband dead, consumed poison after feeding it to their 17-year-old daughter Rekha.

Elumalai’s elder daughter Jyothi Lakshmi had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend 20 days ago.

The man’s friends said he was depressed after her elopement. Several others who knew him spoke ill of Lakshmi, which could have forced him to take the extreme step.

Raju S, a friend of Elumalai for the past 14 years, said the man could not tolerate others speaking ill of his daughter.

“He used to blame himself and question himself what had gone wrong with the girl’s upbringing,” said Raju.

Elumalai’s death note said he had found it difficult to continue to act normal after his daughter’s elopement.

He had been working as bar bender.

Raju added that he was unsure if Lakshmi had been informed of the tragedy. The family hailed from Tamil Nadu.
