The police said a major mishap was averted as the Shakti petrol bunk, where the incident had occurred, did not catch fire.

The accident happened around 3 pm, when a lorry sped into the petrol bunk, and smashed a Tata Sumo, which was filling fuel. The Sumo driver, AS Chandrashekhar, 27, died instantly after he was crushed between the lorry and his vehicle.

Before ramming into the Sumo, the lorry had knocked down Chamanna, 30, a pedestrian. The man, working as a security guard in HAL, sustained serious injuries in the incident.

The deceased Chandrashekhar was a resident of Sanjaynagar, while Chamanna was from Whitefield. Soon after the accident, the lorry driver fled, abandoning his vehicle. The police were suspecting that the driver might have lost control over the lorry, resulting in the accident. The possibility of brake failure was not ruled out.

The police said Chamanna had been admitted to the Vydehi Hospital.
