A proposal to set up a Bangalore bench of the Cyber Appellate Tribunal is under consideration, in the wake of increasing cyber crimes, IT secretary MN Vidyashankar said on Tuesday.  The tribunal, set up in accordance with the IT Act, 2000, is currently based in New Delhi.

NA Vijayshankar, director of Cyber Law College, said the Bangalore bench of the tribunal would be expanded to become a southern bench for all appeal cases in the region, eliminating the need for litigants to travel to New Delhi.

The IT secretaries of each state were expected to function as adjudicating officers and conduct enquiries within their jurisdiction on matters relating to cyber crimes.

If any of the parties were dissatisfied with the outcome, they could then approach the tribunal and if still not convinced, approach the high court and later the Supreme Court.

A cyber lab would become operational in Mangalore within a month, Vidyashankar said announcing a two-day Bangalore Cyber Security Summit 2011, slated to commence on Thursday.

The lab, being set up with help from Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited, would create awareness on cyber crimes.
