Cubbon Park’s fish canteen to reopen after facelift

Connoisseurs of sea food in the city will soon have more reasons to visit Cubbon Park as the revamped fish canteen is all set to reopen for the public soon.

The new canteen will sport a swanky ambience, thanks to the Rs1 crore renovation work on it.

Fisheries minister Anand Asnotikar said that fish canteens would be set up in all the districts. “There is a great demand for sea food in the city and also in the rural areas. We have decided to set up fish canteens in all districts of the state,” said Asnotikar.

The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation will implement the project, the minister said. “We have already taken steps to open fish canteens in Tumkur, Kolar, Shimoga and other districts,” he said.

Asnotikar said that the fisheries department had achieved a turnover of Rs1,000 crore. He added that an experimental pen cultivation project had been taken up at Linganamakki reservoir this year on a public-private partnership model.

“Once it is successful, we will think over and extend it to other places as well. In Karwar, cage fish culture will be taken up shortly. In Hesaraghatta, an aqua park will be set up at a cost of Rs2 crore. Ornamental fish will be reared and fish seeds will be produced in Hesaraghatta,” said Asnotikar.  The Union government has approved the expansion of Mangalore fishing harbour. The work to expand the fishing harbours in Malpe and Honnavar will also be carried out, said Asnotikar.
