Corporators to show how to keep Bangalore clean

Now, corporators and BJP volunteers will help in educating people on segregation of waste. Speaking to media persons, mayor Venkatesh Murthy said: “The BJP membership drive is going on now. Once it is over, we will ask  party volunteers to go to houses and educate people about segregation of waste. Corporators will also do the same in their wards to show their interest in keeping the city clean. The volunteers will specifically talk to residents on Cauvery, kasa (waste) and plastic,” he said.

The BBMP has also joined hands with resident welfare associations to educate people on the same. “We will hold a  programme for apartment owners on Saturday at 6.30 pm at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in  Malleswaram. People will  be shown how to segregate waste. They can also clear their doubts about separating waste,” said BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel.

“Bangalore generates around 4,000 tonnes of garbage daily. Of this, 1,500 tonnes are from bulk generators such as  choultries and hotels. Waste generated by households is around 2,500 tonnes. Each household hardly generates  around 600 grams of wet waste daily. It costs us Rs1 per kilo to compost or process the waste. This comes to not  more than Rs18 a month,” Goel said.

The BBMP is hurriedly implementing the segregation of source rule in the city as Mandur landfill fill be closed soon.
“The Municipal Waste Rule 2000 clearly says that dumping is prohibited. Since 2000, we have been wrecking Mandur by dumping so much garbage. It is our moral responsibility to clean it,” he said.
